Battery energy storage is an evolving market, and the fire safety aspect of this technology has become an emergent, hot topic in the utility industry. Over the past several years, Duke Energy has constructed, operated, and owns 9 Lithium-Ion battery energy storage D-Tied assets totaling 40Mw.
During our operations experience, we have learned a lot about storage container design, fire safety specifications, and best practices of fire safety training. In turn, we applied those learnings to develop industry-leading fire safety systems and training programs.

Speakers
Karen Glitman, Center for Sustainable Energy
Karen brings more than 35 years of policy advocacy and public service experience, advancing energy justice and tackling climate change by accelerating access to clean, affordable, and efficient energy for all. She leads CSE’s Distributed Energy Resources group that leads California’s Solar on Multifamily Affordable Housing (SOMAH) and San Diego’s Solar Equity programs as well as SDG&E’s Self Generation Incentive (SGIP) program.
Prior positions include Director of Efficiency Vermont, VEIC’s Director of Transportation Efficiency, and Director of Strategy, Policy, and Public Affairs. She is also the past director of the University of Vermont’s National University Transportation Center and served as acting Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and Director of Policy and Planning at the Vermont Agency of Transportation where she first began working on electric vehicles and the transportation and energy nexus. She served as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives and the Jericho Elementary school board.
Sergio Carrillo, Connecticut Green Bank
Sergio Carrillo is Managing Director of Clean Energy Incentive Programs with the Connecticut Green Bank, where he oversees all programs and efforts designed to deploy clean energy through incentives by the Green Bank. The Incentive Business’s current programs include the Residential Solar Investment Program (RSIP), the Smart-E Loan, the Solar for All Program, and the recently launched Energy Storage Solutions Program aimed at deploying 580 MW of behind-the-meter battery storage in the state.
Before joining the Connecticut Green Bank, Sergio worked with Chesapeake Utilities Corporation where he held several positions, including Manager of Rates, Contracts and Regulatory Affairs, and most recently acted as Director of Corporate Development, overseeing Strategy development and implementation. Sergio also has extensive experience leading retail electricity pricing to residential, commercial, and industrial customers, as well as wholesale pricing. He holds a B.S. degree in civil engineering, a M.Sc. in petroleum and natural gas engineering from Penn State University, and an MBA from Duke University – The Fuqua School of Business.
