The electric grid is undergoing a historic transformation with increasing decarbonization goals prompting high penetrations of renewable energy, retirement of traditional fossil fuel assets, and support for wide-spread electrification.   As this transition continues, energy experts are increasingly acknowledging an urgent need for Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) assets for grid stability, reliability, and flexibility to optimally operate and manage renewable energy resources and other dynamics resulting from the changing grid.

This workshop will review LDES definitions and technology types and explore the case for LDES in grid decarbonizations scenarios. Our speakers will evaluate tangible case studies and real-world applications, discussing how various jurisdictions are integrating LDES into resource planning from both a policy and technical perspective.  Speakers will also discuss a landmark LDES study modeled for the California grid by the California Energy Storage Alliance (CESA), which indicates the need for 2 – 11 GW of operational LDES capacity by 2030 to meet or exceed existing carbon policy goals.
