The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has submitted a proposal for 19 temporary exclusions from section 301 tariffs for select Chinese-made solar manufacturing machinery and equipment.
The proposal is calling for the 25% tariff applied to Chinese products coming into the U.S. to be lifted. American solar manufacturing companies who rely on Chinese imported materials are likely to benefit from at least one of the 19 tariff exclusions proposed by USTR.
Once finalized, the tariff exclusions will be implemented retroactively from May 22, 2024, and are expected to remain in effect until May 2025. The exclusions were subject to a 30-day public comment period which expired on June 28, 2024.
According to RSM US, the applicable tariff exclusions can be declared by the importer directly for eligible manufacturing products.
The move is consistent with the Biden administration’s efforts to support domestic manufacturing.
