Avangrid’s Powell Creek Solar Project Delivers Clean Energy to Ohioans

Energy company Avangrid Inc. announced that its Powell Creek solar project, located in Putnam County, Ohio, is now operational and delivering energy to the local power grid.

Powell Creek is home to 300,000 solar panels, with a capacity of 150 MWac (202 MWdc), which is enough energy to power approximately 30,000 homes annually.

It created approximately 500 jobs during construction for local union workers and sits on land leased directly from the region’s landowners, supporting the community through property tax and landowner payments. According to estimates, it will contribute over $31 million to local taxing jurisdictions over its useful life, supporting numerous public services, including education.

Powell Creek is Avangrid’s second project in Ohio; the company built the Blue Creek project in 2012, which has a capacity of 304 MW and produces enough electricity for around 76,000 homes each year.

“Powell Creek is an important, utility-scale solar project that will contribute to Northwest Ohio’s economy and energy independence. This project is coming online as energy demand continues to rise across the country, partly due to the growth of manufacturing, electrification, and data centers. When we add new sources of energy onto the grid, like Powell Creek, we’re creating a more robust and reliable electricity infrastructure to benefit the local community, region, and state,” said Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO, in a statement.
